  The British Cemetery was created in May 1942 for four sailors, two known and two unknown, that washed ashore from the HMS Bedfordshire after she was torpedoed by German U-boat.
  
  To this day the United States Coast Guard station at Ocracoke maintains the property. A British flag flies at all times over the graves of those British sailors. The flag is replaced each year with a new one sent by the Queen of England.
